Internet 25 Gbit: Switzerland yes, USA no

7/7/2026

Show notes

Have you ever wondered why Switzerland offers 25 Gbit symmetric internet with multiple providers and reasonable prices, while the US and Germany lag behind with slower connections and little choice? The key isn't just in "free market" or "regulation," but in how we deal with natural monopolies. In Switzerland, fiber infrastructure is seen as a neutral, shared asset where companies compete on services. In the US, by contrast, territorial monopolies have formed, and in Germany, an "overbuild" of redundant infrastructure. Both approaches fail to recognize that replicating the same infrastructure is a waste, resulting in stagnation and inferior service for the consumer.

Why it matters: Understanding the dynamics of natural monopolies is crucial for designing policies that foster true competition and innovation, instead of stagnation and high costs.
