GLM 5.2 and the imminent collapse of margins with AI

7/8/2026

Show notes

GLM 5.2, an open-weight model from Z.ai, signals a disruption in the AI economy. Directly competing with Opus and GPT, it's notably difficult to distinguish in daily use. Despite being slower, lacking vision support, and having poor web search capabilities, its compatibility with OpenAI/Anthropic endpoints makes migration trivial. This pressures the high inference margins of top-tier players, as switch costs are incredibly low. For enterprises, the open-weight nature allows for self-hosting or other providers, solving privacy challenges for sensitive data. This is the true "DeepSeek moment" for inference.

Why it matters: The ease of switching to top-tier open-weight models will redefine the AI economy, forcing down inference margins and giving real control to developers and enterprises.
