The Tower Keeps Rising

The Tower of Babel analogy, often seen as a story of hubris, is actually about the power of coordination and a common language for technological progress. In software development, this "language" is the shared understanding of a system's concepts, boundaries, and rationales. AI tools and programming agents, while dramatically increasing the individual developer's capacity, are removing the friction that previously forced us to collaborate and synchronize our understanding. The risk is that software projects will scale like a new Babel: not because people can't communicate, but because they don't need to. Changes continue to happen, the "tower" keeps rising, but the architectural language that allows humans to collectively reason about the system disappears, and there is no immediate failure to alert us.
Why it matters: AI-driven individual productivity can mask the erosion of coordination and shared understanding, leading to complex and unsustainable projects in the long term.
